Investigative
Services
The Investigative Services division is responsible for investigating
all crimes reported to the Police Department. The Detective
Sergeant reviews all crime reports and determines which cases
can be followed up based on solvability factors. Not all cases
have "leads" to follow up, such as minor thefts or
acts of vandalism for which there are no witnesses or suspects.
The cases are worked based on the seriousness of the offense.
Typically, crimes committed against persons receive the highest
priority.
Investigative
Services also makes a significant contribution to the prevention
of crime. This is done by analyzing crime data, gathering intelligence
information, and watching for patterns of criminal activity.
This division may conduct surveillances, execute search warrants,
conduct "sting" operations, or work with a task force
to address ongoing criminal activity.
In
addition to the primary task of investigating criminal activity,
the Investigative Services division performs a variety of other
tasks. These activities include juvenile issues, background
investigations of Police Officer applicants and all individuals
required to be licensed by the Village, registration of convicted
sex offenders, and alcohol/tobacco compliance checks.
