New Police Station
In 2001, the Village received 29.2 acres of land on which to construct a new police facility through a unique land swap agreement with the Fox Valley Park District. Under this agreement, the Park District received the current police station and land in exchange for 29.2 acres of Park District located north of Route 30, west of Orchard Road. After the new facility is built, the Park District will use the old police station for their policing activities, but will allow the Village to continue to use the old facility for its Community Policing Program and emergency needs.
The
29.2 acres provides a site large enough for a future Civic Center
Campus, although the only building contemplated at this time
is the new police station which will be built on approximately
5 acres of the property. Site improvements on the property began
in 2002, while actual construction of the new police facility
began in 2003.
In early 2002, a sign was erected along Route 30 to mark the future location of the new police station. Village officials visited the site in March during their tour of surrounding communities' police facilities. Shown left to right are: Trustee Bill Keck, Trustee Cyndy York, Village President Marilyn Michelini, Trustee Roger Burrell and Trustee Denny Lee.
On
September 9, 2002, Village officials gathered at the site of
the civic center campus for a formal groundbreaking ceremony.
This event marked the beginning of the mass grading of the site,
which will involve earthmoving and installing utility lines.
A separate groundbreaking for the new police station was held
in the spring of 2003.
In
August 2002, Architectural and Construction Management firms
were invited to submit their qualifications to perform services
in connection with the new police facility. Staff reviewed the
submittals and selected three top contenders in each category.
Village
staff then toured public facilities designed and/or built by
these firms. Based on the site visits, Staff recommended Fred
Berglund & Sons to provide construction management services,
and the Yas/Fischel Partnership to provide Architectural/ Engineering
services for the new police station.
Construction
of the building began in 2003 and the exterior walls were completed
in August 2004. The roof was then added and work began on the
interior. By May 2005, the finishing touches were being completed
on the interior. Decorative lighting was added and other exterior
work was completed. Several community Open Houses were held
in July 2005 so the public could view the new building. By the
end of July, dispatching operations were transferred to the
new facility and the move was completed in August 2005.
