Water Supply and Water Quality

The Village's Water Treatment staff is certified by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and is responsible for potable water supply, treatment, distribution and quality testing. Currently, the water system treats and distributes approximately 2 to 3 million gallons of water per day to roughly 15,000 users in Montgomery and the unincorporated Boulder Hill Subdivision. Numerous water samples are collected throughout the year to meet State and Federal Water Quality requirements.

Our raw water supply is obtained from a total of eight groundwater wells. We withdraw groundwater from a combination of four different aquifer systems. An aquifer is a geological formation that contains water. The four aquifers we pump water from are, from shallowest to deepest, the St. Charles Sand and Gravel, the Silurian Limestone, the Glenwood-St. Peter's Sandstone, and the Ironton-Galesville Sandstone aquifers.

After the raw water is withdrawn from the groundwater wells, it is pumped to the Village's Lime Softening Water Treatment Facility, which has been in operation since 1990. This facility represents a culmination of efforts by the Village's leadership to provide safe, high quality water for everyone that receives Village of Montgomery drinking water.

Following aeration, softening, and filtration at the water treatment plant, your drinking water is disinfected with the use of chlorine gas and then fluoride is added to help reduce dental problems. The finished drinking water is pumped into the Water Distribution System where it is distributed to each of the water consumers. In an effort to continue to maintain the high quality drinking water we distribute, the Village is currently completing a number of improvement projects throughout the Water Works System. Please keep in mind these improvement projects will help strengthen our system, so the long-term benefits of these improvements should far outweigh any short-term inconveniences.
