Montgomery Designated as a Green Power Community

Green Power

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has designated the Village of Montgomery as a Green Power Community, recognizing its use of green power to reduce its environmental impacts associated with conventional electricity use. Through this program the EPA works with more than a thousand partners purchasing billions of kilowatt hours of green power annually and encourages ways to reduce the environmental impacts associated with purchased electricity use.

Eligo is offsetting 100% of the eligible customers’ usage with renewable energy, regardless of whether residents are enrolled with Eligo or ComEd. Presently, there are approximately 1,100 customers enrolled with Eligo while the majority stay on default ComEd supply. Everyone pays the same ComEd Price to Compare, regardless of placement.

To offset the eligible customers’ usage, Eligo purchased and retired 37,996 renewable energy certificates (RECs) on behalf of Montgomery. This has offset approximately 37,996,000 kWh of electricity annually consumed by the eligible customers and equates to over 59,000,000 pounds of CO2 removed from the atmosphere, 29,601,205 pounds of coal burned, or 3,022,920 gallons of gasoline consumed per the EPA.

By using green power, the Village of Montgomery is helping to support the development of new renewable energy generation capacity nationwide while also helping to protect the environment.
